Is the EU’s current approach to CO₂ fleet limits actually still justifiable?
Of course: NO!!
In a joint “open letter” to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, leader of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, they call on
1. Sebastian Lechner, State Chairman of the CDU in Lower Saxony
2. Manuel Hagel, CDU Baden-Württemberg Party Chairman
3. Dr. Markus Söder, party chairman of the Christian Social Union
, is calling for a major course correction in the upcoming revision of CO₂ fleet limits.
The letter states verbatim: “The European CO₂ fleet regulation must be designed in a way that is consistently open to all technologies. The decisive factor must not be which propulsion technology is used in the vehicle, but whether it actually contributes to CO₂ reduction. The federal government’s position rightly makes it clear that vehicles powered by renewable fuels must also be recognized as climate-neutral solutions within the framework of the fleet regulation.”
The representatives of the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Lower Saxony—the “heartlands of the German automotive industry”— – are therefore demanding that “a clear course correction be made in the further legislative process: toward genuine technological openness, a flexible and practical approach to achieving the goals, and a clear commitment to competitiveness and industrial strength in Europe.”
