Fuel can be produced from renewable electricity โ but how does it work?
The production of electricity-based eFuels can be simplified into three steps:
- Electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.
- The hydrogen is then processed further using captured COโ.
- This can produce synthetic fuels such as petrol, diesel or kerosene.
Using these fuels releases COโ. Total greenhouse gas emissions depend on the entire life cycle, particularly the sources of electricity and COโ, as well as production and transport.
Suitable applications depend on the specific fuel, its specification and the approvals of the relevant vehicles or equipment.
