Is Germany as a business location for the automotive industry really in great danger due to the end of the combustion engine?
The Federal Council is apparently now also clearly saying: YES! Because on December 20, 2024, at the initiative of the Saarland, it passed a resolution to support the automotive industry with its more than 770,000 jobs nationwide and thus secure Germany as a business location. In the resolution, the Federal Council emphasizes that “the transformation to sustainable drive technologies in the course of global development continues to be a necessary prerequisite” in order to keep value creation and jobs in Germany in the future. In the course of the transformation, however, “avoidable disruptions, market losses and job losses” must be avoided. As a bridge to e-mobility, the safest possible market environment must be created in order to be able to continue developing the existing drive technologies towards a sustainable model range with a reliable market option. The Federal Council calls for the following measures in the development:
1. to readjust existing or previously planned legal framework conditions in order to adapt them to the current economic reality and current consumer behavior. 2. to bring forward the revision clause to review the EU decision that no new cars with combustion engines may be registered from 2035 onwards, thus enabling the existing regulation to be adapted in a timely manner. 3. negotiation by the German government at European level to ensure that the phased models for the years 2025, 2030 and 2035 set out in the EU regulation on CO2 fleet limits for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are adjusted in terms of time and quantity. 4. suspend the planned penalties for non-compliance with the CO2 fleet targets in 2025 for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, as these will hit car manufacturers and their suppliers hard in the current difficult economic situation and transformation.
