Is it really not possible to achieve our climate targets without eFuels?
Porsche engineer Karl Dums and many other automotive experts say quite clearly: YES, our climate targets cannot be achieved without e-fuels, although Dums already made this very clear to edison.media a few months ago: “Climate protection without e-fuels will not work.”
He also dispelled two persistent misconceptions about eFuels!
False prejudice number 1: “eFuels are too expensive”
Dums calculates: “Electricity in Germany is far too expensive to use for fuels. (…) In Chile, on the other hand, electricity doesn’t cost us 8 cents per kilowatt hour, but 2 cents. In other words: 20 kWh costs around 1.60 euros in Germany, but 40 cents in Chile.” The energy can then be transported to Germany, for example, in liquid form.
False preconception number 2: “eFuels are inefficient”
If eFuels are produced in regions where renewable energies are available in virtually unlimited quantities, then efficiency does not play a role. For this reason, Porsche and other partners have built a pilot plant in Chile that is powered by wind energy that would otherwise go to waste.
Dums emphasizes: “E-fuels are particularly important for the vehicle fleet. They cannot simply be decommissioned and the replacement of vehicles cannot be accelerated at will in order to conserve resources.” On the other hand, anyone who can charge their e-car sustainably should of course drive electrically.” To the interview: https://edison.media/verkehr/klimaschutz-ohne-e-fuels-wird-nicht-funktionieren/25248726/
