Is the industrial ramp-up of synthetic fuels really just a fairy tale – as many critics keep claiming?
Of course not!
This is how Neste for example, is just starting to produce sustainable aviation fuel in a biorefinery in Rotterdam!
Good to know:
The refinery was converted so that Neste can produce up to 500,000 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) per year within the existing capacity. This has increased the Finnish energy company’s global SAF production capacity to 1.5 million tons (around 1.875 billion liters) per year.
In addition to the recent modifications to the refinery, the company is continuing its strategic investment project for growth in Rotterdam. This will more than double the company’s production capacity at this site to 2.7 million tons of renewable products per year, making the refinery the world’s largest plant for the production of renewable diesel and SAF.
The expansion, scheduled for completion in 2027, is expected to increase Neste’s total global annual production capacity for renewable fuels to 6.8 million tons, with total annual SAF production capacity then amounting to 2.2 million tons.
