Is there really no progress being made in the rollout of synthetic fuels—as some critics and media outlets continue to claim?
Of course: all over the world, and even in Germany!
Following its technological breakthrough, Synhelion, based in Jülich, is now taking the next crucial step toward commercial operation: the production of synthetic kerosene (SAF), synthetic diesel, and synthetic gasoline.
To this end, Synhelion is receiving funding from North Rhine-Westphalia’s “Produktives.NRW” grant program. The funds will support the construction of a commercial demonstration plant for the production of renewable synthetic fuels at Brainergy Park in Jülich. Approximately 90 million euros from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund are available for the program, to be distributed among a total of nine projects aimed at promoting industrial innovation in the Rhineland mining region and the northern Ruhr area.

Being selected for this funding will support Synhelion as it takes its next step toward scaling up. Building on the successful operation of its first DAWN plant, the company plans to build a commercial demonstration plant in Jülich. DAWN has validated Synhelion’s technology on an industrial scale and reduced the technological risk.
The new facility is now intended to demonstrate commercial operation and pave the way for financing additional facilities. The majority of the production capacity is already secured through binding, long-term purchase agreements with major customers.
