Diesel fuel-replacing HVO achieves highest CO2 savings

Do modern HVO fuels really save a significant amount of CO2?

According to its recently published “Evaluation and Experience Report for 2023”, the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food clearly says: YES.

According to the report, biofuels alone saved a total of 12 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2023 – with HVO again achieving the highest savings of diesel-replacing biofuels in the 2023 quota year.

Good to know:

1/ According to Google, HVO (“Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil”) is “a renewable diesel that is produced 100% from renewable raw materials such as waste and residues.”

2/ Since 2023, biofuels made from palm oil no longer count towards the greenhouse gas reduction quota. This decision follows the requirements of the EU Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II).

3/ HVO100 is already available at German filling stations and the number of filling stations offering HVO is growing steadily.
