Because according to reports from cleanthinking.de the largest single-site solar power plant in the world – the Al Dhafra Solar Power Plant – was recently commissioned in the UAE! This modern 2 GW power plant is located about 35 km from Abu Dhabi and, according to cleanthinking.de, “consists of almost 4 million solar modules covering 21 km² of desert. The modules are bifacial, meaning they capture sunlight on both sides of the module to maximize the amount of electricity generated.” Good to know:
According to cleanthinking.de, Al Dhafra will “reduce the UAE’s CO2 emissions by 2.4 million tons per year, the equivalent of taking almost half a million cars off the road.”
But above all, the project shines by achieving one of the most competitive tariffs for solar energy in the world at just 1.32 US cents/kWh, which is of course also due to its sunny location with largely empty desert areas.
