South America’s largest direct air capture (DAC) plant is in operation

Another step forward in the field of eFuels:

In recent weeks, DACMA GmbH – one of the pioneering DAC manufacturers headquartered in Hamburg – has commissioned the first industrial DAC plant with a capacity of 300 tons of CO2 per year and handed it over to its customer PUCRS IPR. The plant, consisting of five units, was built in Hamburg, shipped to Brazil and installed on the campus of PUCRS IPR (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul) in Porto Alegre. Good to know:
According to many experts, this type of CO2 capture plant could make a substantial contribution to the decarbonization of transport with combustion vehicles in conjunction with eFuel production and with appropriate industrial scaling.

And also good to know (DACMA website):
“A first small prototype with a capacity of 15 tons per year has been running smoothly around the clock at the customer’s site since 19 April 2024. With the commissioning of the new industrial DAC system, the order is now complete. The purpose of these DAC systems is to determine the adsorption material, scale up and store the captured CO2.”

The project is a further step towards the expansion of a DAC system with a capacity of 5,000 tons per year in Salvador de Bahia, for which DAMCA has already signed a letter of intent and carried out a feasibility study.
