eFuel GmbH and the eFuels Forum welcome the initiative of Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing to promote eFuels as a solution to achieve climate protection targets at the international eFuel Conference in Munich on September 4, 2023. However, for this global challenge to succeed, appropriate framework conditions are required.
One solution to reduce CO2-eFuels are the only way to reduce transport emissions by the required amount and thus successfully combat climate change. At the invitation of German Transport Minister Volker Wissing, the transport ministers of the G7 countries as well as representatives of the European Union and other international institutions will discuss how this is possible and what conditions are necessary at the international eFuel Conference in Munich on September 4, 2023. “The international high-profile conference is an important signal to highlight the significant role of eFuels as a global solution to achieve climate protection goals,” emphasizes Dr. Lorenz Kiene, Managing Director of eFuel GmbH and the eFuels Forum.
However, to ensure that eFuels are available in sufficient and affordable quantities as quickly as possible, policymakers must create the appropriate conditions for the market ramp-up and for the development of a global eFuels industry. In Dr. Kiene’s view, several steps are necessary for this: “We have to guarantee investment security for companies so that setting up production facilities on an industrial scale is attractive for them from an economic point of view.” In this context, internationally valid certification and trade standards as well as sustainability criteria must be established.
According to Dr. Kiene, it would also make sense to target the taxation of fuels at their CO2-emissions instead of the energy content as in the past. This would lead to sustainably produced fuels becoming more competitive in price compared to fossil fuels and thus also gaining consumer acceptance accordingly. Ideally, all CO2-emissions into a competitive system via international certificate trading.
Another important requirement is long-term international energy partnerships. “eFuels are sensibly produced in regions where renewable energy from wind and sun is available in almost unlimited quantities for production,” explains Dr. Kiene. In most cases, these are emerging and developing countries whose economies and thus populations benefit from the development of eFuels production in their own countries. Under an eFuels import strategy without barriers and market restrictions, liquid CO2-neutral base fuels, fuels and methanol can then be transported to Europe, processed if necessary, and used in all modes of transport. “These new energy partnerships help diversify the energy systems of industrialized countries while strengthening economically weaker regions,” Dr. Kiene is convinced. A win-win situation for the climate and the international economy.

About the eFuels Forum:
The eFuels Forum was founded in the summer of 2021 and now consists of more than 40 energy companies and interest groups from all over Germany as well as the technology partner CAC Engineering GmbH. The platform aims to inform the general public about eFuels. To this end, the team traveled more than 5,000 kilometers across Germany in the summer of 2021 and 2022 in a BMW Mini fueled with eFuels from CAC to explain the advantages of synthetic fuels as part of an information tour at filling stations. In addition, the eFuels Forum is active at trade fairs and other events as well as on the social media platforms Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Since 2021, other partnerships have emerged from the eFuels Forum, such as eFuel GmbH and Klima Kraftstoffe GmbH. The goal of these companies is to participate in ventures and initiatives to bring synthetic fuels to market. For more information, visit www.efuels-forum.de.

neutral and crisis-proof into the future – with eFuels, this vision can become reality. To accelerate the process, ten medium-sized oil companies have joined forces to form eFuel GmbH. The company’s goal is to participate in companies and initiatives that develop and bring eFuels to market. A higher amount in millions is available for this purpose.
