FIA develops own synthetic fuel for tests

The FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) has developed its own sustainably produced fuel for use in Formula 1.

It is produced from three components: biological waste from which sustainable hydrocarbons are produced (BtL), ethanol produced from agricultural waste and toluene, which is also produced from waste products.

Every manufacturer competing in Formula 1 has now been given 200 liters of this synthetically produced fuel for testing purposes. On dynamometers, manufacturers are now testing the differences from conventional fuel in terms of parameters such as anti-knock properties, performance and consumption.

The FIA intends to use these findings to define the parameters for future fuels. By 2025, Formula 1 is to run entirely on sustainably produced synthetic fuels. In addition, all other FIA championships and thus the very largest part of the international motorsport world are to be converted to e-fuel.
