Last chance for eFuels: How the CDU wants to save the combustion engine

According to the EU Commission, cars should no longer emit C02 from 2035. The conservatives in the European Parliament want to prevent the project.

Brussels. In the battle for the internal combustion engine, the decisive round has begun. In the next few weeks, the EU wants to agree on exhaust emission values for cars. So far, the bill states that by 2035, no more carbon dioxide (C02) will come out of the tailpipe of a new vehicle. And the carmakers can dispense with the exhaust altogether, because every car with an internal combustion engine emits C02 – even if it is powered by eFuels.

The conservatives in the European Parliament want to change that. They want to remove the 2035 target and allow eFuels to be included in automakers’ carbon footprints. This emerges from the amendment of its transport policy spokesman, CDU MEP Jens Gieseke. Why shouldn’t we keep all our options open?” asks Gieseke.
