Hoya, October 20, 2025 – Technology openness instead of a one-way street: the eFuels Forum sees the German government’s change of course as an important signal to Brussels – and is calling for eFuels to finally be recognized as an equal contribution to CO2-neutral mobility.
The eFuels Forum welcomes the results of the car summit in Berlin in October 2025. Representatives from politics, the automotive industry and trade unions have made it clear that the path to CO 2-neutrality must be designed to be open to all technologies. The eFuels Forum believes that the German government’s announcement that it will lobby Brussels for a softening of the EU-wide de facto ban on combustion engines from 2035 is an important and long overdue signal. “Climate protection can only succeed with openness to technology,” says Lorenz Kiene, Managing Director of the eFuels Forum. “We need solutions that promote innovation and utilize all potential for COâ‚‚ reduction – in addition to electromobility, this also includes synthetic fuels that can power vehicles in an almost COâ‚‚-neutral way.”
The eFuels Forum sees the planned revision of the European COâ‚‚ fleet regulation as a crucial opportunity to establish a fair and holistic assessment of different drive technologies. The current tailpipe approach, which only measures emissions from driving, urgently needs to be replaced by a life cycle assessment. This is the only way to correctly reflect the actual climate contribution of modern drive technologies, especially eFuels.
“eFuels can make existing vehicle fleets COâ‚‚-neutral quickly and effectively – and with existing infrastructure. Europe must not squander this opportunity,” demands Kiene. In addition to battery-electric mobility, synthetic fuels are also a key building block for COâ‚‚-neutral road transport.
The eFuels Forum is calling on the German government to lobby Brussels for regulation that actively enables the use of renewable fuels and counts their COâ‚‚ reduction effect towards fleet targets. This is the only way Germany can achieve its climate targets and at the same time secure the competitiveness and jobs of the domestic industry.
