For the first time in the world, a passenger flight has been conducted with a large admixture of e-fuels in the tank. Shell supplied the e-kerosene to the Dutch airline KLM for the flight from Amsterdam to Madrid. This was an admixture of 500 liters of the synthetic kerosene. The e-kersosene was produced in a research center in Amsterdam. The President and CEO of Shell Netherlands highlighted that he was very proud that “the production of the fuel based on CO2, water and renewable energy” had succeeded.

KLM CEO Pieter Elbers added that he sees upscaling the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel as the biggest contribution to reducing CO2 emissions with the current generation of aircraft.

Following the presentation of KLM’s e-kerosene project at an EU conference, some EU member states have already called on the EU Commission to draft a regulation on a European blending requirement for e-fuels. The development of sustainable synthetic kerosene is also seen by member states as one of the most promising and effective ways to reduce aviation emissions, according to KLM’s presentation.
