Renewable electricity can be turned into fuel—but how does that work?
The production of electricity-based eFuels can be broadly broken down into three steps:
1. Using electricity, water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.
2. The hydrogen is then further processed using the recovered CO₂.
3. These can be used to produce synthetic fuels such as gasoline, diesel, or kerosene.
Their use releases CO₂. The total amount of greenhouse gas emissions depends on the entire life cycle—in particular, on the source of the electricity and the CO₂, as well as on manufacturing and transportation.
If the fuels are produced using renewable electricity and meet the applicable sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction criteria, they can provide renewable energy for all mobility applications.
