Battery-electric vehicles produce no CO\u2082 exhaust emissions in this context. This does not classify them as climate-neutral over their entire life cycle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The debate on CO\u2082 fleet regulation also concerns which stages of a vehicle\u2019s life cycle are considered. In its white paper \u201cDefossilisation, Not Decarbonisation\u201d, the CirculaTUM research network at the Technical University of Munich advocates a life cycle-based approach. TUM presented the study on 1 September 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The criticism of existing regulation represents the researchers\u2019 position. It does not replace an assessment of the assumptions and system boundaries used in each calculation.<\/p>\n<p>For the eFuels Forum, it is crucial that comparable criteria also apply to synthetic fuels. Carbon-containing eFuels release CO\u2082 during combustion.
