font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\"><br \/>\n  <b>Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuels.<\/b><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; But  <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\"><b>what does &#8220;efficiency&#8221; actually mean in this context?  <\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">To which properties it refers  <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">itself and when is it significant? In the following text, which was prepared in collaboration with experts and  <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Scientists of the <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\"><br \/>\n  <b>Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)<\/b><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"> and the <\/span><b><br \/>\n  <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">University of Applied <\/span><br \/>\n  <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">Sciences Hamburg (HAW Hamburg) <\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">you will find answers to these questions. <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">These are underpinned by presentations that experts regularly use at specialist, <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">scientific symposia.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Most<b> efficiency analyses<\/b> only refer to the electric motor <b>without considering <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">the overall system<\/span><\/b> <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\"><b>before and after the motor<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">. The <b>high <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">efficiency of the electric motor<\/span><\/b> then compensates <b> <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">for the losses in electricity production.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">  off. This is done by <b>first<\/b> converting the <b>electricity into hydrogen<\/b> and then producing <b>an eFuel by adding CO2 <\/b>. This explains the name of the <b>synthetic fuel: electro based fuel<\/b>. As a <b>hydrogen derivative <\/b>, <b>eFuels<\/b> are therefore nothing more than <b>liquefied<\/b> and therefore transportable green electricity.  One could also transport the hydrogen itself. This is very expensive, however, because hydrogen must be kept strongly cooled and under pressure. In addition, as the lightest element on our planet, hydrogen diffuses quickly through transport pipelines, which presents another problem for transport.<\/p>\n<p><b>So in the end, it doesn&#8217;t really matter how efficient eFuels are in production.<\/b> <b>They only need to be produced where there is no shortage of renewable energy.<\/b> By way of comparison, eFuels production using the conventional <b>Fischer-Tropsch method in Germany <\/b>would make about as much sense <b>as an orange plantation in Germany<\/b>. eFuels are produced in sunny and windy countries for the same reason.  <\/p>\n<p>The <b>efficiency issue<\/b> can also be viewed from a different angle: In terms of <b>cost, time and resource efficiency<\/b>, it makes the most sense to reduce new CO2 emissions from <b>existing vehicles<\/b> and <b>infrastructure<\/b>. In contrast to electromobility, everything is already there. <b>Over 99 percent of the approximately 1.4 billion cars worldwide have a petrol or diesel engine.<\/b> Reducing <strong>new CO2 emissions<\/strong><b>from the existing fleet <\/b>therefore makes the biggest and fastest contribution to<b> global climate protection in the transport sector<\/b>.   <\/p>\n<p>In contrast, <b>electromobility<\/b> requires <b>a completely new infrastructure<\/b> with <b>high resource requirements<\/b> and a correspondingly high <b>CO2 footprint<\/b>. Furthermore, the <b>construction of very heavy electric cars requires additional resources<\/b>, which leads to a further increase in the CO2 footprint<b>(CO2 rucksack<\/b>).  Finally, Germany has a very large <b>energy import requirement of<\/b> 70 percent, so green molecules have to be imported in the form of <b>fuels <\/b>anyway. The <b>liquid form<\/b> is necessary because of the <b>high energy density <\/b>, because then the<b> transport distance<\/b> is practically irrelevant<b>(high transport efficiency<\/b>). If the green molecules are in the country, it is more efficient to use them directly in electricity-independent systems such as <b>combustion engines<\/b> and <b>oil heating systems<\/b> instead of first converting them into electricity with high losses and, if necessary, temporarily storing them in batteries with further losses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67df0d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67df0d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"mythos2\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #3caa88;\">Myth #2: &#8220;eFuels will be expensive&#8221;.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Scientific institutes such as the <b>reFuels group at KIT, which specializes <\/b>in this field, expect eFuels to be affordable in a few years. Manufacturers such as <b>Saudi Aramco<\/b> are also communicating that <b>80 cents<\/b> is achievable in a few years, as the<b> price of electricity in Saudi Arabia is only one cent per kilowatt hour<\/b>. The market-based customer impulse is essential for <b>time- and cost-efficient<\/b> <b>climate protection <\/b>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ee4fba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ee4fba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"mythos3\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #3caa88;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Myth #3: &#8220;eFuels should only be used in shipping and aviation.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A restriction to the comparatively small and cost-sensitive <b>sectors of shipping and aviation <\/b>would hinder the <b>ramp-up of <\/b>eFuels. In addition, <b>the production of aviation fuel automatically generates fuels for road transportation <\/b>as <b>by-products<\/b>. So when thinking about the <b>optimal use of resources<\/b>, the <b>synthetic by-products <\/b>such as <b>ePetrol<\/b>, <b>eDiesel<\/b> and<b> eHeating oil<\/b>, which are created as <b>by-products<\/b> during the production of<b> eKerosene<\/b>, should also be used. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b42f102 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b42f102\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"zusammenfassung\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Summary:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><b>eFuels are produced in sun- and wind-rich countries<\/b>. These are mostly southern countries where <b>photovoltaic systems<\/b> or<b> wind turbines <\/b>can harvest <b>green energy efficiently <\/b>(analogy: orange). Most of the graphs in the media are based on the wrong basic assumption of an eFuels production according to the Fischer-Tropsch method in Germany.<\/li>\n<li>We<b> do not have enough energy available in Germany <\/b>. Germany&#8217;s <b>energy import requirement<\/b> is 70 percent. This means that we have to <b>import<\/b> green molecules in the form of <b>liquid energy sources<\/b> anyway. Their most efficient use is directly in <b>electricity-independent systems such as internal combustion engines and oil-fired heating systems<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>With regard to vehicle propulsion, <b>the overall system efficiency from the gust of wind or sunshine to the turning wheel is crucial<\/b>. Either the green power is harvested with low efficiency in Germany, with the <b>efficiency losses <\/b>being compensated by the higher<b> efficiency of<\/b> the electric motor compared to the combustion engine. Or the green energy comes from countries where it can be harvested with high efficiency.  <b>In the end, the overall results are on the same level.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Efficiency is not an end in itself<\/b>, but is only relevant in the event of a shortage or cost advantages. <b>There is no shortage of green energy worldwide.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It is neither cost-, time-, resource- nor climate-efficient to transform the entire technology world in addition to defossilizing energy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Allocation exclusively to ships and aircraft hinders the expansion of eFuels plants <\/b>and <b>ignores<\/b> the <b>co-products for road transport<\/b>, which are generated during fuel production anyway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5ae981 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5ae981\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #3caa88;\">Other regenerative, synthetic fuels<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Incidentally, <b>electricity-based eFuels <\/b>belong to the <b>group of regenerative,<\/b> <b>synthetic fuels<\/b>. <b>Other synthetic fuels<\/b> that are also <b>produced without petroleum<\/b> are <b>residue- and waste-based fuels <\/b>such as <b>Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO)<\/b>.
